How Horizon Europe and the European Defence Fund support different stages in the development and application of advanced technologies.
The development of new industrial technologies takes place through several stages, from research and process validation to the demonstration of systems under real operating conditions. Different stages of development require different partners and sources of funding.
For the development and application of LOOPER technology, the Horizon Europe and European Defence Fund (EDF) programmes are particularly relevant. Although both support the development of new technologies, they differ in their objectives, areas of application and expected project outcomes.
Horizon Europe – Research, Development and Demonstration
Horizon Europe is the European Union’s main programme for research and innovation. It supports the development of new technologies, their validation, integration with other systems and the demonstration of new solutions through international consortia.
For Indeloop, Horizon Europe provides an important framework for developing new capabilities of LOOPER technology and connecting thermochemical waste conversion with other industrial and energy systems.
The AshCycle project explores opportunities for the material valorisation of solid residue from the LOOPER process, including its potential use in construction materials.
The North Adriatic Hydrogen Valley (NAHV) project connects hydrogen production, distribution and use within a regional hydrogen ecosystem, with Indeloop developing LOOPER as one of the pathways for hydrogen production from locally available waste streams.
European Defence Fund – Technology Development for Defence Applications
The European Defence Fund supports collaborative European research and development of defence technologies and capabilities. The programme focuses on projects that bring together industry, research organisations and end users from multiple European countries.
For LOOPER, this funding programme is important because it enables the technology to be adapted to specific operational environments where energy autonomy, mobility and reduced logistical dependence are key requirements.
The SENTINEL project develops and demonstrates energy solutions for military camps, including decentralised waste processing and on-site energy production.
Different Projects, One Development Path
Horizon Europe enables the development of new technological solutions and their integration into civilian industrial and energy systems, while the European Defence Fund supports the development and adaptation of technology to the requirements of the defence sector.
Participation in different European programmes allows LOOPER to be developed across multiple applications and operational environments, while continuously generating data, validating the technology and increasing its technology readiness level.
